Secuestrar

Phew! It has been an eventful 24 hours! A little disclaimer though...I have always felt safe here :)

BUSY week. Mostly due to the enormous task Christmas letter writing is here. Fr. Jack sends out over 4000 each with a personal note written on it. People are more likely to donate than just a regular form letter. Time is a little short this year due to his sister dying a few weeks ago. They need to be done by Friday so a volunteer group can take them back to US to be mailed there as it is a lot cheaper.

Anyway, there's the background, now the the story. Fr. Jack has been working on the letters at a retreat center away from the parish. Tuesday night he returned to the parish for dinner and then left about 9:30 with 3 other guys to go back to retreat center for the night. Well, someone must've seen him driving with 3 young guys and worried he was getting kidnapped (secuestrar). So they called the police. Funny thing is the police didn't show up at the retreat center until 11am the next morning (when I was there...YES!). The parish called Fr. Jack on his cell phone so he had a heads up, but 8 police officers showed up, one with his GUN drawn! Fr. Jack explained what was going on, answered a couple questions and offered the officers pop and candy (which they all accepted haha). The one NEVER put his gun away though. Seriously???

Meanwhile, back at the parish...4 young guys tried to rob the parish offices yesterday morning too! Luckily nothing happened. And this morning as I walking to my run the street I have to cross was flooded (its a dirt road so it was real muddy too). Apparently a watermain broke at 4am. It is 7:50 right now and the city still hasnt responded. What a mess!

Heres a couple photos of the water main break. If I had my camera yesterday I wouldve tried to take a picture of the police officer holding is gun in one hand and his pop and candy in the other....
